M-POWERHOUSE was organized as an unincorporated association in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in 1995 to address the etiology of youth violence and poverty in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Harry P. Marshall, MD., and Terry Smith then Chief Anesthesia Technician focused on creating a revolutionary model to develop economic, education, and health strategies that address the root cause factors for youth violence. They developed an M-Powerhouse model to address the physical, psychological, educational and environmental needs of urban youth.
On March 26th, 2008 M-POWERHOUSE held a Youth Symposium in which 170 youth attended and participated in a "Circle of Life Series" that discussed violence, sexually transmitted diseases, and a countless number of soci-economic conditions that negatively affect youth.
I want to thank Durham Public Schools, Southern High School, and Hillside High School students who participated in the Youth symposium. I want to thank the parents/ guardians for giving your future young adult an opportunity to participate in an event that discussed gang violence, sexually transmitted diseases, smoking cessation and tobacco usage, teen pregnancy, healthy eating habits, investing money for the future and the importance of voting.
Review the events page and look at the businesses, organizations, speakers and universities and college students who volunteered. I want to thank our board members Dr. Ira Q. Smith, Theresa Wahome, PhD., Thomas Spivey, CPA, Lieutenant Winslow Forbes, Dr. Harry Lightfoot, Jr., and Co-Founder Dr. Harry P. Marshall for their time and talents.
I want to reiterate a special thanks to Cy Young of Foxy 107/104 and K97.5 radio station, Lieutenant Howard Alexander of the City of Durham Police Department, Kawachi Clemons, Professor of Rap Music and North Carolina Central Universitiy Hip Hop Initiative and to keynote speaker Christopher (Play) Martin (formerly of Kid "N" Play) for his motivational, uplifting and heartfelt speech to the youth.
There is something happening in North Carolina when you see supporters come together. The momentum you all created cannot stop now. Together we can lead our youth in a new direction and create a model program. The tattered fiber is being woven. M-POWERHOUSE future plans is to have symposiums and educational venues throughout North Carolina and focus on the future M-POWERHOUSE Enrichment Center.
This email fundraising initiative is a neccessity when it comes to challenging ourselves to want something more for the future young adults of tommorrow. We need the brightest minds, but most importanly the warmest hearts to give.
M-POWERHOUSE is tax deductible. Give and get back in return. The seeds you help plant will become a fruitful harvest.

» Parents: What You Need To Know About Your Teen And Drugs & Alcohol
By Susan Epstein
Do you suspect that your teen is using or abusing alcohol or drugs? Is there a nagging feeling in the back of your brain that you really need to check this out? Are you afraid of what you might find? Do you worry when your son or daughter is out with friends for hours on end and you really don't know where they are?
Then join the ranks of parenting teens today in America. In almost every interaction I have with parents of teenagers this topic comes up. Parents don't know what to do. Should I search his room? Should I confront her? Should I demand a drug test? Will I drive an even bigger wedge into our
already distant relationship? Maybe it's just normal that she is experimenting...but her moods have changed. Are you frightened for your teen's safety?

Supported through a grant from the Triangle United Way, Durham City/ County will host its Second Annual Project Homeless Connect (PHC), which will be held on September 25, 2008 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park(DBAP). PHC is a one-day, one-stop, on-site center designed to link homeless people with a broad range of needed services. These include housing, employment and health care. Unlike an information fair, Project Homeless Connect directly engages homeless people with services. The event will include community volunteers to be directly involved in helping individuals and families make significant steps towards ending their homelessness.
