Mission Statement:

M-POWERHOUSE was organized as an unincorporated association in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in 1995 to address the etiology of youth violence and poverty in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Harry P. Marshall, MD., and Terry Smith then Chief Anesthesia Technician focused on creating a revolutionary model to develop economic, education, and health strategies that address the root cause factors for youth violence. They developed an M-Powerhouse model to address the physical, psychological, educational and environmental needs of urban youth.

 Medical Terminology Class
M-Powerhouse conducted a Medical Terminology Class For Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club on July 21st, 2008. Michelle Hussey, RN and ICU Nurse conducted the program.

M-POWERHOUSE is developing a partnership with the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club. On Monday July 21st at 3:30 PM, Michelle Hussey, RN, BSN and Critical Care Nurse and Volunteer/Speaker for M-POWERHOUSE conducted a Youth Medical Terminology Class for M-POWERHOUSE. The youth are with the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club.

Setting goals and having an imagination at an early age is key to youth becoming future healthy productive young adults. Mirror emulating and positive role models can transform young minds and by being exposed to a medical profession may one day reverse the attrition of healthcare professional shortage.

End Homelessness in Durham Project Homeless Connect
Supported through a grant from the Triangle United Way, Durham City/ County will host its Second Annual Project Homeless Connect (PHC), which will be held on September 25, 2008 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park(DBAP). PHC is a one-day, one-stop, on-site center designed to link homeless people with a broad range of needed services. These include housing, employment and health care. Unlike an information fair, Project Homeless Connect directly engages homeless people with services. The event will include community volunteers to be directly involved in helping individuals and families make significant steps towards ending their homelessness.

Project Safe Neighboorhoods
Each month we will feature an organization that is working to help teens. Please take a moment to visit their website and see what they are all about.

What is Project Safe Neighborhoods?

Project Safe Neighborhoods is Durham's comprehensive, strategic response to the gun violence in our community. PSN focuses on partnering federal, state, and local law enforcement with local community and faith-based organizations to develop research-supported strategies to reduce violent crime. Law enforcement targets violent repeat offenders to remove them from our neighborhoods, while community partners develop viable resources for those offenders who are committed to changing their past involvement in crime and gun violence. Together, law enforcement and the community work to change the norms that make gun violence acceptable through targeted outreach efforts and public awareness campaigns.
